Applications for Loctite thread sealants

Loctite thread seals are available in various forms, from threaded threads to liquid and gel seals to semi-solid products. Depending on the design, Loctite thread seals are used to prevent gaseous and/or liquid media from escaping.

When using Loctite thread sealant, the relevant area is immediately sealed, even under full pressure. The situation is different with Loctite thread sealants, which still have to harden. With these, the sealing effect is initially only given against low pressure. Only after complete curing are most pipes with these Loctite thread sealants tight up to bursting pressure.

Advantages of thread sealants from Loctite

Compared to conventional sealants – solvent-based sealants, PTFE tapes, hemp and paste – Loctite thread sealants have advantages for the following reasons:

  • Solvent-based sealants have the disadvantage that they shrink during curing due to the evaporation of the solvent, which means that the threaded connections have to be retightened to reduce the gaps.
  • In the case of threaded connections sealed with PTFE tapes (polytetrafluoroethylene tapes), dynamic loads can cause these connections to loosen by themselves. This results in a loss of preload, which leads to leakage. Dynamic loads can also accelerate the creep of the PTFE sealing tape, resulting in leaks. However, even tightening the threaded parts when using PTFE tapes is problematic, as too much preload is often generated, which can cause the components to break.
  • The disadvantage of hemp and paste is that they are not clean during assembly and are a hindrance when generating the preload force. In addition, with hemp and paste you often have to rework until you get a connection that is 100% tight.
