The Henkel story: From detergent to adhesive

The beginnings of the Henkel Group date back to 1876, when Friedrich Karl Henkel founded the Henkel & Cie detergent factory in Aachen (Germany). However, it took a few more years, until 1907, before Henkel introduced Persil, the detergent known to many today.

The expansion of production at Henkel into the adhesives sector was born out of necessity. In 1922, there was a supply shortage of adhesives that Henkel needed for gluing its own Persil packaging. So the Henkel chemists developed their own packaging adhesives, which were initially produced for the company’s own needs. Just one year later, the company’s own glue was sold to a company next door. By 1928, Henkel adhesives were already being exported and today Henkel is the largest manufacturer of adhesives in the world.

In addition to its leading role in the adhesives industry, Henkel is still strongly represented in the consumer goods business today. The production of detergents by Henkel continues to this day, but Henkel is now also particularly well known in the cosmetics sector; many people are familiar with the hair cosmetics company Schwarzkopf, which Henkel took over in 1995.
