Certain measures must be taken to ensure that personal earthing is effective. This article explains what these are and the easiest way to ground people.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the purpose of personal earthing?<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an ESD protection zone, also known as an EPA (&#8220;ESD protected area&#8221;), the aim is to prevent electrostatic discharge sensitive devices (ESDS) from being damaged or even destroyed by uncontrolled electrostatic discharges. An ESD protection concept is drawn up for this purpose, which must also provide for earthing of personnel. ESD is the abbreviation for the English term &#8220;electrostatic discharge <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elektrostatische_Entladung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the context of personal earthing, the aim is to ensure that electrostatic charge in the body of an employee, supervisor or visitor is discharged in a controlled manner. This earthing contact is the middle pole in the socket outlet. It is also called the protective conductor or protective earth (PE).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If no socket outlet is available or if it does not meet the earthing requirements, a <strong>separate protective earth conductor<\/strong> can also be laid. This is earthed at its end via the connection to a so-called earthing lug, earthing rod or earthing spike. The earthing rod is usually made of galvanized steel or stainless steel and is between one and several metres long. For earthing, this metal rod is driven into the ground and connected to the protective conductor at its upper end.   <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <strong>equipotential bonding system<\/strong> can also be used as an alternative to earthing. The purpose of earthing is to prevent uncontrolled discharges by discharging electrical charges. An equipotential bonding system has the same purpose, with the difference that no electrical charges are discharged.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More precisely, it is a potential equalization connection in which the electrical connection of certain elements prevents a potential difference and thus an uncontrolled electrical discharge from occurring between people and objects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most common type of personal earthing: the earthing bracelet<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/erdungsarmband\/\">earthing strap<\/a> is the most common type of personal earthing and also the simplest. This type of earthing works as follows: <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Put the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/produkt-kategorie\/esd-electrostatic-discharge\/esd-personal-earthing\/esd-wristbands\/\">earthing bracelet<\/a> on your wrist<\/li><li>Connect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/produkt-kategorie\/esd-electrostatic-discharge\/esd-personal-earthing\/esd-cable\/\">the spiral cable<\/a> to the push button on the earthing bracelet<\/li><li>Connect the other end of the spiral cable to the push button of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/esd-erdungsbaustein-fuer-steckdose\/\">earthing module<\/a>, for example<\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/esd-erdungsbaustein-fuer-steckdose\/\">Earthing modules<\/a> are earthing connections for the socket outlet. Thanks to the flexibility of the ESD spiral cable, its carrier has a certain amount of freedom of movement. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"box wp-block-foresite-product\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/erdungsarmband-1977129\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/product-images\/armbandhel.jpg\" alt=\"Erdungsarmband\" title=\"Erdungsarmband\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/erdungsarmband-1977129\/\"><div class=\"product-title\">Erdungsarmband<\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Table mat earthing<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another option for earthing is to use an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/esd-tischmatten-alfaplan-s\/\">ESD table mat<\/a>, which has two press studs. The earthing wrist strap is connected to one of the two press studs on the table mat and a <g id=\"gid_1\">connecting cable<\/g> is connected to the other press stud on the table mat, which is connected to an <g id=\"gid_2\">earthing module<\/g> at its other end. In this way, the wearer of the earthing wrist strap, which is connected to the table mat, is earthed.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Table mats are particularly suitable for grounding people when working on devices with electrostatically sensitive components, for example in the manufacturing sector or during repairs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"box wp-block-foresite-product\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/esd-tischmatten-alfaplan-s-zuschnitt-1983007\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/product-images\/tischbelag.jpg\" alt=\"ESD Tischmatten Alfaplan s, Zuschnitt\" title=\"ESD Tischmatten Alfaplan s, Zuschnitt\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/esd-tischmatten-alfaplan-s-zuschnitt-1983007\/\"><div class=\"product-title\">ESD Tischmatten Alfaplan s, Zuschnitt<\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Earthing via the floor<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an ESD floor covering is present, the easiest way to ground yourself is to wear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/produkt-kategorie\/esd-electrostatic-discharge\/esd-shoes\/\">ESD shoes<\/a> or shoes with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/dauerfersenband-mit-klettverschluss\/\">permanent heel strap<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/produkt\/einwegschuherdungsstreifen\/\">disposable shoe grounding strip<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/good-to-know\/esd-shoes-what-are-they-and-when-are-they-necessary\/\">ESD shoes<\/a> are designed in such a way that they dissipate the electrostatic charge in the wearer&#8217;s body into the floor in a controlled manner via the soles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With shoe earthing straps, for example, a permanent heel strap can be used to earth the wearer of the strap via an ESD floor.
