We also explain how you can try to prevent electrostatic discharges and possible ESD protection measures, and give examples of electrostatic discharges. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ESD meaning<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In answer to the question <strong>&#8220;What is ESD?&#8221;,<\/strong> i.e. the <strong>meaning of ESD<\/strong>, it must first be said that ESD is an <strong>abbreviation<\/strong> that stands for <strong>&#8220;electrostatic<\/strong> <strong>discharge&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electrostatic discharges are dangerous for people and electronics for various reasons. First of all, it must be noted that an electrostatic <strong>discharge<\/strong> is <strong>possible<\/strong> <strong>without contact<\/strong> between the respective objects and\/or people. Electrostatic discharge can therefore also occur over a certain distance. In addition, electrostatic discharges <g id=\"gid_3\">often<\/g> occur <g id=\"gid_3\">unnoticed<\/g>, which makes them even more dangerous. And it is not only <strong>people<\/strong> who can discharge, but also <strong>objects<\/strong> that have previously become electrostatically charged, including tools, trolleys and work surfaces.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another problem: <strong>ESD damage<\/strong> to electronic components is sometimes <strong>difficult to detect<\/strong> &#8211; usually only with an electron microscope. The damage caused by electrostatic discharges therefore sometimes only becomes noticeable when the end customer uses the respective devices\/systems, which <strong>greatly<\/strong> increases the <strong>costs of repairing the damage<\/strong>, also because the damaged or destroyed components are already installed. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please also read our ESD overview article:<\/strong> &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/good-to-know\/esd-electrostatic-discharge\/\">ESD &#8211; Electrostatic discharge<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electrostatic discharge examples<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>distinction is made between electrostatic discharges<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spark discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peak discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tuft discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Corona discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sliding brush discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bulk cone discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lightning discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lightning discharge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several <strong>examples<\/strong> of electrostatic discharge <strong>in everyday life<\/strong>. Below we list some examples of electrostatic discharge: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discharge after walking over carpet on door handle or when shaking hands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discharge when taking off a charged sweater &#8211; audible in the form of a crackling sound<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discharge after rubbing a woolen cloth against a balloon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discharge by lightning after charging of water particles in clouds by winds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human electrostatic discharge<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all electrostatic discharges are dangerous for all people. However, <strong>certain people<\/strong>, such as those with pacemakers and hypersensitive people, are already <strong>at risk<\/strong> from <strong>electrostatic discharges with a very low charge potential<\/strong>. There are also discharges, such as spark discharges or brush discharges, which can lead to a person being <strong>shocked<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Strong charges<\/strong> can also lead to <strong>cardiovascular failure<\/strong>. Furthermore, electrostatic discharges in humans are often trivialized. However, accidents involving electrostatic discharge can cause <g id=\"gid_3\">nausea<\/g>, <g id=\"gid_4\">pain<\/g> (e.g. <g id=\"gid_5\">headaches<\/g>) and <g id=\"gid_6\">numbness<\/g>, even at <g id=\"gid_2\">lower charge potentials<\/g>; to avoid consequential damage, these symptoms should be clarified by a medical examination. <strong>Damage to skin tissue <\/strong>and<strong> nerve cells<\/strong> can also occur.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, electrostatic discharges can also pose a danger to people and property if the person in question is <strong>startled<\/strong> by the discharge and causes an accident, for example, and injures themselves, others or something else.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Electrostatic discharges<\/strong> are also <strong>dangerous<\/strong> for <strong>people<\/strong> if they work with <strong>flammable gases, flammable liquids or flammable debris<\/strong>. When these gases, liquids or debris are discharged, for example, they can be <strong>ignited<\/strong> by a <strong>spark<\/strong>, which can <strong>result in an explosion and\/or fire<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to their danger, electrostatic discharges can also be differentiated according to their <strong>perception<\/strong>, whereby the respective perception depends on the voltage level:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Noticeable<\/strong> from 3,000 volts (e.g. on door handle)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>audible<\/strong> from 5,000 volts (approximately a crackling sound)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visible<\/strong> from 10,000 volts (lightning)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electrostatic discharge electronics<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Many electronic components<\/strong> are considered <strong>ESD-sensitive<\/strong>, which means that electrostatic discharges can <strong>disrupt<\/strong> the <strong>function of<\/strong> these components or lead to <strong>damage<\/strong> or even <strong>destruction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Damage caused by ESD is also dangerous because it results in the manufacturer and\/or supplier <strong>losing customer confidence<\/strong> and incurring <strong>warranty<\/strong> <strong>costs<\/strong> in the event of complaints.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just <strong>5 volts<\/strong> is enough to <strong>damage<\/strong> the <strong>read head of a magnetic hard disk<\/strong> during production. At <g id=\"gid_3\">100 volts<\/g>, <g id=\"gid_4\">information<\/g> stored on a <g id=\"gid_5\">magnetic data carrier<\/g> is <g id=\"gid_4\">erased<\/g>. An <strong>electronic memory module<\/strong> is even <strong>destroyed<\/strong> after a <strong>discharge of 100 volts<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ESD protection<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are various measures that can be taken to protect against certain uncontrolled electrostatic discharges. For example, you can try to<strong> avoid<\/strong> <strong>electrostatic charges <\/strong>. Because where there is no charge, there is no discharge. So to try to prevent electrostatic charging, you can take measures such as dissipation and earthing. The use of antistatic materials can also be tried here.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another ESD protection measure is the attempt to <strong>prevent<\/strong> an <strong>uncontrolled electrostatic discharge<\/strong>.
