{"id":2001697,"date":"2025-04-14T09:44:50","date_gmt":"2025-04-14T07:44:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/wissenswertes\/esd-protective-measures-checklist-and-daily-self-check-in-10-steps\/"},"modified":"2025-12-01T14:51:58","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T13:51:58","slug":"esd-protective-measures-checklist-and-daily-self-check-in-10-steps","status":"publish","type":"knowledge","link":"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/good-to-know\/esd-protective-measures-checklist-and-daily-self-check-in-10-steps\/","title":{"rendered":"ESD protective measures checklist and daily self-check in 10 steps"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To ensure adequate ESD protection, it is essential that certain ESD protection measures are checked regularly, some of them on a daily basis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In the following, we have compiled a detailed checklist of ESD<\/strong><strong>protective measures and a daily ESD self-check in 10 steps, although both lists are not exhaustive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why ESD protection is important<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>abbreviation ESD<\/strong> stands for <strong>&#8220;electrostatic discharge&#8221;<\/strong>. Such discharges occur when there is an exchange of charge between two objects because these objects have a different voltage potential. The fact that certain objects become charged can be caused by friction on the surface, for example.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ESD protection<\/strong>, i.e. protection against electrostatic discharge, is particularly <strong>important<\/strong> for <strong>electrostatically sensitive components (ESPs)<\/strong>, as these can be damaged or even destroyed by such discharges.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Electrostatically sensitive components<\/strong> are also known as<strong> ESD-sensitive components, ESD-sensitive components<\/strong> or <strong>electrostatically sensitive components<\/strong>. In English, the abbreviation for &#8220;electrostatically sensitive component&#8221; is <strong>ESDS<\/strong>, which stands for &#8220;electrostatic discharge sensitive devices&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entire <strong>ESD protection zones<\/strong> are <strong>set up<\/strong> to ensure even greater protection. In these ESD protection zones (also known as EPA, which stands for &#8220;ESD protected area&#8221;), ESD-sensitive components are protected during their production, assembly or repair, for example. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The size of an ESD protection zone can vary greatly. Because if nothing charges, nothing can discharge. On the other hand, it is important that <strong>any charges are discharged in a controlled manner rather than in an uncontrolled manner<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>following types<\/strong> of <strong>ESD protective measures<\/strong> can be distinguished:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Personal protective measures <\/strong>(ESD shoes, ESD clothing, ESD wristbands, ESD gloves, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Work-related protective measures <\/strong>(ESD mats, ESD floors, ESD furniture, ESD packaging, ESD trolleys, ESD tools, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protection programs <\/strong>(employee training, review of ESD measures, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ESD checklist for checking ESD protection measures<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below we have compiled an <strong>ESD checklist for checking ESD protection measures<\/strong>, although this list is not exhaustive and therefore does not claim to be complete:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ESD control program plan<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/good-to-know\/esd-control-program-creation-establishment-and-maintenance\/\"><strong>ESD control<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/good-to-know\/esd-control-program-creation-establishment-and-maintenance\/\"><strong>program-P<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/good-to-know\/esd-control-program-creation-establishment-and-maintenance\/\"><strong>lan <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abovo.ch\/en\/good-to-know\/esd-control-program-creation-establishment-and-maintenance\/\"><strong>according to IEC 61340-5-1<\/strong><\/a> created?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the <strong>ESD control program plan regularly checked to ensure it is up to date<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ESD representative<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has the <strong>ESD officer<\/strong> attended sufficient <strong>ESD training courses<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has a <strong>representative<\/strong> been appointed <strong>for the ESD officer<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does the <strong>ESD officer<\/strong> <strong>check<\/strong> <strong>the ESD protection measures<\/strong> often enough?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ESD training for employees<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does <strong>ESD training take place for employees<\/strong> &#8211; However, this self-check is not exhaustive, but only intended as a supportive or stimulating measure.
